The report covers in the first part antidegradants and particulate fillers and processing oils, extenders, plasticizers, process aids, surfactants, coupling agents, internal adhesion promoters, fire retardants, bactericides, blowing agents, and colorants in the second part. In both parts, a similar format is used to describe the reasons why these materials are use, the ways in which they work, and recent advances. Broad scope of literature is reviewed.

For many years’ rubber compounding was largely empirical and frequently described as a black art. Today it is practised predominantly on the basis of scientific principles elucidated over years of study and is still the subject of intensive research.
